Aspiring Poets Have a Chance to Publish their Work

Students and adults can submit their best unpublished poem to the James J. Nicholson Political Poetry Prize Competition.

Locate that muse and get your poetry on paper so you can submit your work to the James J. Nicholson Political Poetry Competition in time for the Feb 21. deadline.

Now in its fourth year, the competition was first established in memory of James J. Nicholson, an influential supporter of the Town of Pelham Public Library. The contest is open to students, students and Westchester County residents who are 18 or older.

One winner will be chosen from each age group.

Potential participants can submit only one typed entry with a maximum of 30 lines.

Winners will be announced in April and will have their work published in Pelham Weekly and read aloud at the Town of Pelham Public Library. The three will get cash prizes too. The middle school, high school and adult winners will be awarded $100, $150 and $500 respectively.

The judge for this year's competition in the adult category is Sherman K. Poultney, who has published numerous poetry books, short stories and plays.

"We are very happy that Sherman Poultney has agreed to judge the adult category of our competition," said Peggy Nicholson in a published statement released by the Pelham Public Library.
