Bobby Sanabria to Perform at Bartow-Pell

Latin jazz great Bobby Sanabria is performing at the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum on Aug. 3.

A Bronx native and multiple Grammy nominee, Sanabria is a drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, conductor, and bandleader who has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Paquito D’Rivera, Afro-Cuban jazz godfather Mario Bauzá and other jazz legends. Sanabria, the band’s musical director and drummer, will be joined by Jeff Lederer on tenor and soprano saxophones, and flute; Enrique Haneine on piano; and Carlo DeRosa on acoustic bass.  

Sanabria’s music has been featured on numerous Grammy-nominated albums, including the soundtrack to The Mambo Kings and other movie soundtracks, and on television and radio. He is the associate producer of the award-winning documentaries The Palladium: Where Mambo Was King, and From Mambo to Hip Hop.

 A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Sanabria is on the faculties of the New School and the Manhattan School of Music, and conducts Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Bands at both schools. In 2011, he was named Percussionist of the Year by the Jazz Journalist Association. Sanabria’s latest CD, MULTIVERSE, with his electrifying 19-piece Big Band, will be available in August on the Jazzheads label.

“We welcome Bobby Sanabria, a native Bronx talent, to Bartow-Pell, a hidden historic jewel in the Bronx,” says BPMM executive director Ellen Bruzelius. “Sanabria and his band will jazz up BPMM in August with their Latin beat.”

The Museum will be open from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Visitors may tour the mansion, stroll the garden and enjoy refreshments. Tickets are $8; $5 for seniors and students; and free for members. Light refreshments will be provided at no charge. Free transportation is provided by the Bronx Seaside Trolley, which makes a continuous loop from the Bx29 bus stop at Pelham Bay Park (last stop on the #6 train) to the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum and to City Island. The trolley runs from 5:25 to 10:30 p.m. The last pick up at Bartow-Pell is at 8:40 p.m.
