In its final&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sarahlawrence.edu/news-events/being-human/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Being Human</a> event of the academic year, <a href="https://www.sarahlawrence.edu/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sarah Lawrence College</a> presents acclaimed author and researcher <a href="https://brianchristian.org/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Brian Christian</a> in conversation with <a href="https://www.sarahlawrence.edu/about/leadership/president/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">President Cristle Collins Judd</a>.&nbsp;
Brian Christian's work&nbsp;explores the human implications of computer science. He is best known for his bestselling series of books: <a href="https://brianchristian.org/the-most-human-human/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Most Human Human</a>, which uses his experience as a human “confederate” in the Turing test to examine what chatbots reveal about the nature of language and communication; <a href="https://brianchristian.org/algorithms-to-live-by/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Algorithms to Live By</a>, with Tom Griffiths, which applies computational principles to everyday human decision making; and <a href="https://brianchristian.org/the-alignment-problem/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Alignment Problem</a>, a nuanced investigation of the ethics and safety challenges confronting the field of AI and a portrait of the community of researchers working to address them.
Christian’s writing has been translated into 19 languages, and has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Wired, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, The Paris Review, and in scientific journals such as Cognitive Science. His work has won several literary awards, including fellowships at Bread Loaf, Yaddo, and MacDowell, publication in Best American Science &amp; Nature Writing, and an award from the Academy of American Poets. He has been a featured guest on The Daily Show, The Ezra Klein Show, and Radiolab, and has lectured at Google, Meta, Microsoft, Yale, the Santa Fe Institute, and the London School of Economics. He has advised business executives as well as Cabinet Members, Parliamentarians, and administrators in five countries about matters ranging from decision-making to AI.

About: Charles Day managed commercial fruit orchards in the UK for many years and spent several seasons grafting on a contract basis. Since moving to the US in 2000 he has worked as a consultant and was also a horticultural interpreter at Wave Hill until he retired in 2020.

Erika Leeuwenburgh received her Bachelors in Fine Arts at Hood College, Frederick, Maryland and a Masters in Art Therapy at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York. Art has been an integral part of her personal and professional life as an art therapist. 
In 2023 artist and art therapist, Erika Leeuwenburgh, created Mandalas daily. This exhibition presents a select few of those Mandalas with her reflections. The reflections speak to both her conscious and unconscious experiences of art that flowed into a circle. 
MANDALA is a word that comes from Sanskrit meaning CIRCLE and completion. Mandalas made from sand, stain glass or a variety of art materials are created in many spiritual traditions often symbolizing God, the cosmos, a soul, self, or a microcosm of the universe. The circle is a universal (archetypical) symbol with a wide variety of meanings such as wholeness, cyclic movement, timelessness. Humans have always seen circles in the sun, moon, or a human face and in turn created wheels, clocks, and other circular items to advance societies. 
The act of making a mandala is often associated with focusing attention to facilitate prayer, meditation and centering or accessing the unconscious with the goal of creating a sense of unity, oneness (with God or the cosmos), greater awareness and inner peace. The Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Jung, created daily mandalas for self-analysis and believed it was a representation of the unconscious self.
She resides in Northern New Jersey.

Demystifying Medicare is offered as part of the ongoing work of the Westchester Library System to provide authoritative, actionable information that supports seniors in being connected and well-informed. In this engaging session you will learn about the various parts of Medicare and the costs associated with medical and drug insurance provided by the government and private companies.
Topics include original Medicare, Medicare Advantage Plans, prescription drug plans (Part D), Medigaps (supplemental plans), and cost-saving programs like EPIC that can help seniors with limited resources.
