'Relay for Life' Pelham Steps onto Glover Field June 1st

Final week countdown to American Cancer Society's signature fundraising event.

There's just a week to go until 'Relay for Life of Pelham.' The event, which will increase awareness of cancer and raise funds for American Cancer Society, kicks off on June 1st at 6:00PM at Glover Field.

This is the fourth year of Relay For Life of Pelham. The Relay event, one of hundreds across the country and around the globe is the signature fundraising event of American Cancer Society.

According to Kerry Wong, Director of Special Events for Eastern Division of American Cancer Society, a new DJ company, Big Town Productions, will provide the entertainment and activities for the entire night - from the opening ceremony at 6:00 PM through closing at 6:00AM.

"We'll keep the energy going all night," said Wong. "We just got an incredibly inspiring young cancer survivor to speak during our opening ceremony, so we're starting out our celebration with a true symbol of hope."

Wong also said time will be taken during the evening to remember loved ones lost, and a "Fight Back" ceremony has been added to encourage participants to continue the fight against cancer all year long.

To date 23 teams and a total of 213 participants have raised $25,000 in advance of the Pelham Relay for Life event.  With team names like  "All Night for the Fight," and "Butterflies for Julianne," team members will walk the track throughout the night. Teams camp out around the track overnight, with the abiding rule that at least one member is walking the track at any given moment.

The Pelham Relay for Life Facebook page features a long list of fundraisers held in the lead-up to the June 1st event, including a Mother's Day jewelry sale and a pub night at The Public House. The series of fundraisers all went toward the goal of funding cancer research and building excitement for the Relay event.
