Wartburg Opens $31-Million Rehabilitation and Adult Day Care Center

Mount Vernon, NY October 22, 2013 -- Wartburg, one of Westchester’s largest senior services providers, today opened a striking, $31-million new building that houses a progressive “patient-centered” rehabilitation center and the region’s only adult day services center that is open seven days a week.   Regional dignitaries attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the modern, three-story, 70,200 square foot structure located on Wartburg’s 34-acre campus.

“This fantastic new Center of Excellence is made of concrete and steel but what holds it together comes from our timeless Wartburg values” said David Gentner, president and CEO of Wartburg.  “This is the beginning of a movement towards more of a community-based model of care for seniors in our community.  Wartburg is proud to play a key part in this movement.”

“Wartburg has always been an integral part of our Westchester community and with the completion of the New Rehabilitation and Adult Day Services Center once again they have gone above and beyond to provide much needed services for our communities – our thanks to Wartburg for the work that you do,” noted Lyndon Williams, County Legislator for the 13th Legislative District in Mount Vernon and Vice-Chairman of the Westchester County Board of Legislators.

“For nearly 150 years, Wartburg’s mission has remained constant to serve those in need by providing ministries of healing and hope and this is clearly demonstrated with the addition of Wartburg’s Center of Excellence.  We are grateful to our board of directors and staff who work together tirelessly to fulfill our mission each day – we could not do it without them.” said Edgar Myers, Wartburg Board of Directors, who also served as Emcee for the event.

“The new space is fantastic,” said Dorothy Dussault a registrant in Adult Day Care. ‘’And I really love the staff.  They are the best.  The program wouldn’t be the same without

this staff – they know what we like and what is best for us.”

Rehabilitation Center

The two-story, sub-acute inpatient rehabilitation facility is designed to be “patient-centered” by being split into four small “neighborhoods,” each with 12 or 13 well appointed, private bedrooms.  There are a total of 50 private patient rooms, each with a private bathroom and shower.  Each neighborhood has a common lounge area with a spacious living room, dining space and country kitchen.  The central area on the second floor houses two large, light-filled rehabilitation suites equipped with state-of-the art rehab equipment.

Recuperating stroke, heart and surgery patients benefit from individually tailored treatment plans that are developed by a highly experienced, multi-disciplinary team of caregivers including: on-site physicians; skilled nurses; physical, occupational and speech therapists; a pain management specialist; a respiratory therapist; social workers; dietitians and spiritual care specialists.

Day Services Center

Wartburg’s new adult day services center offers both medical and social models of care  and is open 7 days a week, which is unique in Westchester.  The social model provides socialization and opportunities for meaningful activities for seniors , while the medical program is designed for those who need nursing or therapy interventions and medication administration; including those with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, physical disabilities or who are recovering from illness.

The day services center offers round trip transportation and a full spectrum of services including on-site psychological, podiatry and pain management services; dementia-specific care; an award-winning Creative Aging and Lifelong Learning Program; spiritual care, live entertainment, community trips, and personal grooming  services, including a whirlpool bath and full beauty salon.

Activity and dining areas were designed with 16-foot high ceilings and large windows that provide an abundance of natural light.  There are designated treatment rooms, general activity rooms, a quieter sensory room, physical therapy space and an outdoor patio complete with a shaded trellis.  The adult day services center also has a new drop-off drive that accommodates ambulettes, mini-busses and other vehicles.
