Gatsby Parties, Celebrating Friday the 13th and Washing Cars

Think you're ready for the weekend? 5 Things will make sure you're fully prepared.

Happy Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th comes from a belief that 13 is an unlucky number and Friday is an unlucky day. But why? The actual origin of the superstition is unclear, although scholars believe it appears in a tale in Norse mythology. Friday is named for Frigga, the free-spirited goddess of love and fertility who was banished in shame to a mountaintop and labeled a witch after her people converted to Christianity. Figga was thought to hold a meeting with 11 other witches and the devil (a total of 13) every Friday. Whatever you believe of the origin, we hope you enjoy the day and don’t let any kind of _friggatriskaidekaphobia_ get in the way.

Take your spring cleaning initiative to your car when you head over to Huguenot Memorial Church’s car wash on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds will be donated to the church’s summer mission trips when local teens head to Elizabeth City, North Carolina and Ticuantepe, Nicaragua to offer up community service. Once your auto is spick and span, make sure to load it up with some goodies from the yard sale.

The Pelham Art Center will party flapper style at Saturday’s Gatsby Garden Party fundraiser event. Guests will feast on Bistro-Rollin’s fare and bid on art and luxury goods during the silent auction. Patch is excited to don our gloves and fringy dress and will report all the details on Sunday.

Feed the Homeless

Huguenot continues its mission work on Sunday when it heads to NYC to feed about 100 homeless men and women for its “Midnight Breakfast” initiative. Volunteers plan to leave the church at 7 a.m. and will dole out hot bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, oranges, orange juice, donuts and coffee to those in need.

Get Some Sun…and Rain

Friday is your day to play outside, because we’ll be seeing partly sunny skies with a high near 68, according to the National Weather Service. Saturday is a bit iffy, with a chance of rain, mainly after noon, cloudy skies and some drizzle on Saturday night. Sunday’s not looking a whole much drier, with its forecast of patchy fog and a chance of rain through Sunday night.
