Gluten-Free Sweets, Barney the Dinosaur and the Board of Ed

Today's eclectic 5 Things has something to interest everyone.

Today's edition of 5 Things has a little something for everyone, whether you want to sing-along with Barney or attend a county Solid Waste Commission meeting.

1. Provisions Café and Bake Shop in Pelham now offers some gluten-free treats, including chocolate chip cookies, sugar cookies and double chocolate brownies. And for the holidays, the bakery has a flourless Belgian chocolate torte for Passover, as well as hand-painted Easter cookies and fun cupcakes.

2. Four candidates will vie for two available seats on the Pelham School District’s Board of Education. Incumbents Will Cavanagh and Theodore Howard will run again; newcomers Marianne Gilland and Lester Kravitz have also announced they will run for the open seats. The school board election and the budget vote are scheduled for May 17. Patch will profile all four candidates in the coming days.

3. Everyone’s favorite purple dinosaur, Barney, on Thursday, April 21, at the Westchester County Center in White Plains. It’s Barney’s birthday (what is he now, like 47 or something?) and he’s celebrating with a new, interactive stage show featuring 25 songs, old and new. Shows are at 10:30 a.m., 3 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. Tickets range from $21.50 to $101.50. For more information, call 914-995-4050 or visit barneylivetour.com.

4. If you have any interest in attending a Westchester County government department meeting, you’re in luck. The next two days are packed with municipal meetings. The meets tonight at 5 p.m.; the county meets tomorrow at 3:45 p.m.; the county meets at 6 p.m. tomorrow; the Westchester County meets Thursday at 9 a.m.; and the meets Thursday at 4 p.m. If the members of the Westchester Department of Parks and Recreation are anything like the kooky crew at the Pawnee Parks and Recreation department, you’ll be in for a good time. Follow the links for details on each meeting.

5. In this holy month, the congregation from the Union Baptist Church in New Rochelle has reason to celebrate as they at their Palm Sunday service. A New Rochelle institution that has been in the same location for 100 years, the church was destroyed by a fire on Feb. 14 (Valentine’s Day, of all days) this year. Here’s to the Union Baptist Church congregation’s resilience!
