Grab & Go Kids Planner: Picnics, Scavenger Hunts and Live Music

Gear up for the weekend with your Patch-approved activity guide

There's so much kids' stuff to do this weekend, you just may have trouble choosing.  Definitely take advantage of this great array of activities, both outdoor and indoor. You can select from live music, kids shows, amusement park fun, a poetic scavenger hunt, or running a race. Whatever you do, enjoy your family time!


Where/When: Saturday, May 14 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at in New Rochelle.
Why Go: Families can picnic on the grounds overlooking the Long Island sound as the Yaz Band and Vocalist Julie Hall kick off Wildcliff’s Open Air Performances.
Pricing: $7 - $18.


Where/When: Friday, May 13 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. in downtown Pelham.
Why Go: Local businesses will stay open late, offer sales, novelties, light fare, and more as families get out with the community.
Pricing: Free.


Where/When: Sunday, May 15 at 8 a.m. at the Westchester Graduate Campus of Long Island University.
Why Go: The family that runs together, funs together! Give kids the running bug as you do a 5K, while the kids compete in the 1 mile, and you all enjoy games, food and entertainment. The race supports mental health month and the Taconic Road Runners will be timing the races and awarding medals.
Pricing: $25 adults, $15 children under 15.


Where/When: Sunday, May 15 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Greenburgh Nature Center.
Why Go: Local bands will entertain throughout the day as families picnic on the grounds. Bring your own picnic; refreshments will be available for purchase.
Pricing: Members, $8; non-members, $12; children 2-12, $4.


Where/When: Saturday, May 14.
Why Go: Make it official: kick off the amusement park season as Playland opens for the season.

Where/When: Saturday, May 14 at 11 a.m. at the Emelin Theatre in Mamaroneck.
Why Go: Children ages 4 and up will enjoy their favorite sassy 1st grader come to life in this live performance based on the popular children’s series.
Pricing:$18 adult, $13 children.


Where/When: Saturday, May 14 at 10 a.m. at the Merestead Estate in Mount Kisco.
Why Go: This rhyming scavenger hunt for kids ages 7-10 will have them deciphering poetic clues as they scour the house and garden, encountering live people brought to life from works of art throughout the house.  A musical program of songs performed by acclaimed pianist Michael Boriskin will follow.

Where/When: Sunday, May 15 at 4 p.m. at the Play Group Theatre in White Plains.
Why Go: Zany and hilarious antics of the Wayside School crew will enthrall your child as this beloved book by Louis Sachar is brought to life.
Pricing: $15


Where/When: Sunday, May 15 from 2:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. at , a Gothic Revival manor house on the Sound.
Why Go: Kids can bring a blanket, a picnic, and sit back and enjoy Jill Liflander’s entertaining 40 minute show Water, Beautiful Water.
