Lace up Your Sneakers, Recycle Correctly and Hear a Spring Concert (or Two)

Need some help getting over the hump? That's what 5 Things is for.

Celebrate June 1 (and Some Other Noteworthy Days)

Happy June! Although today isn’t officially the first day of summer (you’ll have to wait until June 21), it is National Running Day, and the birthday of Norma Jean Mortenson – known to the world as Marilyn Monroe – and the death date of Helen Keller. In 1968, Keller passed away in Westport, Conn. at the age of 88. As for Monroe, she was born in 1926 and would have celebrated her 85th birthday today.

Hear the Spring Concerts

It’s a particularly musical day here today in Pelham starting at 9:15 a.m. when the Siwanoy kids kick off their Spring Concert in the gym. The high school band takes the lead tonight at 7 p.m. in the courtyard. But, if it rains, make sure to head over to the middle school gym for the show.

Recycle...Correctly

It isn’t enough to merely sort paper from plastic in your recycling bins anymore. Starting today, Westchester County will be amending its Source Separation Law to include plastics 3-7 to the mandated recycling list. All residents and businesses are required to separate all empty plastic containers marked with the triangular chasing arrows symbols and coded with a 1-7 in the center. Recyclable plastics include food, beverage, detergent and shampoo containers and caps, and products excluded from the amended law include plastic bags, all plastic film, vinyl, large rigid plastics, plastic foam and building materials. Although it isn’t fun rummaging through your trash, it sure feels good saving the planet, huh?

Shop Locally

You probably got the memo from our story on the 3/50 Project that local stores are yearning for your dollars. Need another reason to shop along Fifth Avenue? Well, to celebrate its third anniversary, Gracious Living is offering 25 percent off all shade/blind orders, plus free installation and free measuring, throughout the month of June. Just keep in mind, you need to purchase four or more shades or blinds.
