Patch Picks: Five Sandwiches You Need to Try

A list of Pelham sandwiches that aren't just your average ham and cheese.

It’s a little after 11a.m. Your meager breakfast is starting to wear off— if you were lucky enough to have one. That coffee you had is starting to make your stomach gurgle.  Sooner or later you are going to need some lunch. If there is one thing you will never be far from in Pelham, it's a spot to grab some noontime sustenance. While most of the offerings come in triangle shape, there is another option: the sandwich. Here is a list of Pelham’s standout sandwiches (and one wrap).

The Depot Classic

This is the sandwich that started it all. Rarely do sandwiches inspire people to do things, but the Depot Classic inspired this list. It is no wonder that this Pelham staple has a close following in town. To be able to take down a full wedge of the Depot Classic is something of a badge of honor among high school kids, but if you don’t have a wood chipper-like metabolism then the regular roll size will suffice.

What really makes the sandwich so delicious is the chicken cutlet. They are breathtaking—moist, fresh, thick, with the most amazing zesty coating. Next up is a staple: thick-cut bacon. On top of the bacon is a reservoir of melted American cheese, topped with succulent tomato, shredded lettuce, and mayo. This might be the most amazing culinary combination since peanut butter and jelly.

Thai Chicken Wrap—

This Asian fusion offering from Provisions is deliciously delightful departure from your traditional Kaiser roll sandwich. The spicy and just-a-tad bitter house-made Asian tahini-covered chicken is perfectly complemented by shredded carrots and fresh romaine lettuce. Refreshingly original and not too heavy in your stomach.

Chicken Po’ Boy—

This sandwich takes us down south with its savory flavor. The guys at Depot Market have done it again with their amazing chicken. The Chicken Po’ Boy is  lighter fare than the Depot Classic, but doesn't sacrifice flavor by any means. It begins with the grilled chicken, once again cooked to perfection. Next provolone cheese is melted over the chicken; the young, mild cheese does not overpower the chicken, but emphasizes the taste. To further complement the chicken, spicy Cajun mayo is added to the mix. Put all this upon light and airy focaccia bread, and you have the Chicken Po’ Boy.

Classic roast beef with cheddar sandwich—Wolf’s Lane Deli

This isn’t a special sandwich at Wolf’s Lane, but it should be. Why is that, you ask? It’s because the guys at Wolf’s Lane do this everyday classic right. It is all too often that delis around southern Westchester let their classics slip while trying to impress customers with over-the-top concoctions. That's not the case with this sandwich. The roast beef is the anchor here. It is never old and dried out; it's always rare, juicy, and has that melt-in-your-mouth taste that makes your inner carnivore scream with delight. Classic Boar’s Head sharp cheddar and a generous dousing of Russian dressing, along with lettuce and tomato, makes this sandwich one classic that you can count on.

Bacon Cheeseburger Panini

While this next choice might get me into hot water with some sandwich purists, I believe that since it is a panini, it should be considered a sandwich, and therefore, part of this list.  The folks at M.A.D. have taken the classic burger, thrown it onto hot metal, and made a truly genius sandwich.

The bacon cheeseburger panini is enough to make your head spin. Take a well-crafted burger cooked flawlessly, add thick-cut smoky bacon and lots of cheese, and you’re all set. But then throw it on a bun and toss it in the panini machine? Some would call it foolishness, but if you've tried this sandwich and  tasted how the flavors come together after being paninied, then you know it’s not crazy, just yummy.

Bonus Bite

Chicken Parm Sandwich

Even though this sandwich technically isn’t in Pelham (it's in Bronxville),  it's too amazing to pass up. To be frank, this sandwich will change the way you think about chicken parms. The deliciousness lies in its simplicity: a good roll, mozzarella made that day, tasty sauce, basil leaves, and chicken. Just go and try it already.
