Volunteers Wanted for Pelham Farmers Market

Market organizers are looking for a group of community member to help plan activities for the market this season.

Community Markets, the organization that runs the Pelham Farmers Market, is reaching out to locals in an effort to attract more interest and increase foot traffic.

The organization is looking for five or more residents to join a Pelham market committee that will brainstorm ideas for  bringing in local talent, such as musicians, chefs, and developing kid-friendly activities.

Ideally, the committee would be formed by May 18, the date the first meeting has been scheduled on.

“We want to have some input from the community,” said Miriam Hass, the director of community markets. “It helps to have people in the community who can help us find local talent and help us make the market better.”

In addition to Pelham, the company runs markets in Croton-on-Hudson, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, New Rochelle, Ossining, Pleasantville, Rye,  and Tarrytown. The company also runs markets in New York City, Rockland County and Putnam County.

The Pelham market was started in 2008.

Haas said the she’d like to see the market grow and have more vendors. But in order for that to happen, more people need to come to the market. Haas said the Pelham market gets about half of the customers needed for it to thrive.

“We need to get more people coming to the market and we don’t have that in Pelham,” Haas said. “We figure if we add more activities and involved more people from the community, it can grow.”

Haas said there are already similar committees in Tarrytown, Ossining and Pleasantville. Those committee have all been successful, Haas said.

"We’d be happy  to get five or six people to join from Pelham,” Haas said. “Sometime you’ll get more, but you’ll have a core group who will meet consistently and it has worked.”

Anyone who is interested in joining the committee can call 914-923-4837 and ask for Frankie or Miriam, or emailfrowland@communitymarkets.biz. The Pelham Farmers Market open on Friday, June 2 , from 8:30 to 2 p.m. Go their Web site here for more information.
