Whose idea was it to name every storm. What a really stupid idea. Weathermen should spend more time trying to accurately forecast weather than on stupid things like naming storms.
MitchP February 14, 2014 at 01:27 PM
smellypants - it was the weather channel's idea, I think If you watch TV they are the only ones who seem to refer to the names
dita von struedel van trappyodel February 14, 2014 at 01:33 PM
Agreed SP. Big miss on forecasted snow totals from this storm. Failure to educate the public about the hoax of global warming. Can't forecast accurately more than a day ahead. Naming storms is a world class stupid idea.

Six of the last ten summers have been the hottest on record, and just about every region of the globe is having weather events they've never seen before. Yup, sure sounds like a "hoax" to me, Dita. I have to ask, because I've never gotten an answer, what is the motivation behind this "hoax" you claim exists? Nobody's ever given me an answer to that.
joshua tanner February 14, 2014 at 06:37 PM
The reason for the hoax is A) corrupt academics who like the funding and celebrity B) corporations who look forward to selling new items mandated by new laws C) financial and stock brokers who want to make billions on carbon credits (literally selling air) D) Marxist radicals who want to use fake threats to eviscerate US economy. Greenpeace founder Patrick Moore has long lamented about Marxists hiding behind environment.
Issy February 14, 2014 at 07:45 PM
It is disingenuous to suggest that corrupt academics are behind the science of climate change. I have no idea what people like Tanner do/or did for a living but how would he like it if after spending decades in education and research for very little money and presenting your life work for honest review that some ill-informed hack tells you, you did it for money and fame. Sad indeed. The science is there for all to review, but sadly many willfully remain ignorant.

Oh well while you all fight about esoteria, I notice that once again the USPS does not deliver to 10570 on a snowy day. UPS on the other hand made it just fine. Hmmm. Is there a pattern here?
joshua tanner February 14, 2014 at 08:51 PM
Corrupt academic and researchers (like NASA's James Hansen) get busted all the time with false data. Of course none of their predictions come true. According to Gore and his academic frauds parts of NYC should be underwater now. At the University of East Anglia's Climate research Unit (often cited by UN) academics were busted discusiing how they faked data_____"I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline....The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t. The CERES data published in the August BAMS 09 supplement on 2008 shows there should be even more warming: but the data are surely wrong. Our observing system is inadequate."_____http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/jamesdelingpole/100017393/climategate-the-final-nail-in-the-coffin-of-anthropogenic-global-warming/
Issy February 15, 2014 at 05:05 AM
It is interesting that you do not quote any scientific report but a bias opinion piece by a Fossil Fuel hack from the right wing UK Daily Telegraph. Gore never made any such predictions and the 'trick' refers to a scientific technique to even out data over anomalies. But this is typical Neanderthal tactics, attack the people not the data, which clearly shows the global warming is not only real but a threat to our very existence. TO say that there is a lack of warming is false. The actual fact is there is still warming consistently happening, with vast and troubling amounts of energy (heat) being absorb by the oceans and the poles where temperatures are rapidly rising. But I would urge all those not to listen to dishonest right wing opinion pieces and blowhards, but look at actual peer reviewed scientific data that show what actual is happening.
joshua tanner February 15, 2014 at 09:11 AM
When academics confess they are lying in scientific reports it makes things easy. Nobel Prize winning Gore Gore and climate "scientist" Wieslaw Maslowski predicted arctic ice would be gone by 2013 (melted polar ice was going to raise sea levels 20 feet). Of course the ice is still there and so is the coast. Man Made Warming hysteria and its junk science conceals a political agenda. As Greenpeace founder Patrick Moore has said___"A lot of those in the peace movement were anti-American and, to an extent, pro-Soviet. By virtue of their anti-Americanism, they tended to sometimes favor the communist approach. A lot of those people, a lot of those social activists, moved into the environmental movement once the peace movement was no longer relevant." Social activists "are now using the rhetoric of environmentalism to promote other collectivist agendas, such as class struggle..Sometime in the 1980s the green movement lost its way. It culminated with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 when "an influx of peace activists and Marxist ideologues into the green movement destroyed the remnants of a science-based agenda". _______http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/dec/16/editorial-al-gore-soothsayer/ .

The ice is not still there. The Arctic has lost 50% of its ice, the Greenland Icecap is in free-fall, Antarctica is gaining some ice, but is losing more and Pacific Island are being abandoned due to rising sea levels. Regardless of Gore or whoever's words you want to spin, the evidence for Global Warming is overwhelming. Every scientific discipline is reporting some consequence, from changing seasons, migration patterns, mass extinction, acidic oceans, droughts, floods, etc. etc. Satellite measurements show that there has been a dramatic reduction in energy (heat) being reflected back into space. All this is documented. So you can create any scenario you like, but the facts are the facts and you have no science to back up your ridiculous claims, which is why you attack the scientists.

Joshua - you re are right on target and very well informed on the subject. Issy strikes me as just another peacenik leftover who is looking for a cause, any cause... and Fat Al Gore is their leader. Issy... if the earth is warming why has it been so cold for so long here?
Issy February 15, 2014 at 11:18 AM
Winter combined with an unstable Arctic air mass, due to loss of ice and more moisture in the air due to overall warmer temperatures can result in extreme seasonal colder temperatures and more snow. Please remember weather is not climate. The real problem will come in the summer when the loss of Arctic ice will and has resulted in much warmer temperatures, just as the Southern Hemisphere is experiencing now. I would suggest you spend less time pigeonholing me and creating strawmen arguments and more time reading the science.

Joshua Tanner, I want to express my appreciation for conveying so articulately and succinctly the fact that the global warming issue is indeed all about money, particularly, extorting as much as possible from USA and her citizens. Hypocrites like Al Gore know this, but cannot resist the opportunity to join the rest of the libs at the trough. Check out his 9 million dollar mansion on the left coast, in Montecito CA. Considering the fact that we will soon be losing our coastal areas to global warming, his choice in real estate is curious at best, but ill-advised in any event. His carbon footprint must be astounding. Speaking of liberalism, why is Rockland County so "full of it"?
Patricia February 15, 2014 at 02:17 PM
I am not sure why some of the people posting about global warming always refer to political parties when it is not a political issue but a scientific issue. There are many conservative and liberal scientists who agree on global warming. How ever there is always a politician who will just say what his voters want to hear.
Brian February 15, 2014 at 03:10 PM
Well said Patricia.
Robert F. February 15, 2014 at 03:53 PM
Of course the issue of man made global warming is one of science, but one would have to be terribly naive to believe that it is not a political issue as well. They are NOT mutually exclusive.
Issy February 15, 2014 at 05:05 PM
The only reason it has become a political issue is because the science supporting global warming is so overwhelming that those who value greed and short term profits over the real threat climate change poses to our very existence have made it one. When you look at the actual science it is clear that we need to take immediate action to forestall the effects of global warming.
smellypants February 15, 2014 at 11:40 PM
Please Issy, give it up. Why don't you campaign for the whales or the spotted otters. Global warming is a complete hoax and everyone now knows it after almost three straight years of below normal temps. You and Fat Al Gore need to find another cause.
Issy February 16, 2014 at 04:51 AM
Just more baseless fabrications, temperatures have been and continue to increase and we have been beyond normal highs this whole century. Please tell us all if global warming is a hoax, why are the ice sheets and glacier melting, oceans rising and becoming more acidic, C02 levels increasing, record temperatures being set, increase in extreme weather events, migration patterns changing, mass extinction, severe droughts and more significantly heat radiation to space dropping. If you can explain all this with actual SCIENCE without referring to Gore then I will "give it up", but until then I will be concerned about our children s future (they deserve better) as should you. It is about the science.
smellypants February 16, 2014 at 10:13 AM
Geeeeze Issy...posting at 4:51am? Just back from the bars? Your message sounds like it is a little alcohol injected. None of the things you claim are happening are, in fact, happening. Nonetheless, time to move on to another subject. Today is yet another freezing cold day. I think we've had maybe two or three since Christmas that were normal or above. To me that is not "weather" but climate.
Cal Mendelsohn February 16, 2014 at 10:45 AM
Wow! An article about nature and the lack of plowing turns into a lecture by misguided climate change deniers who try to rebut mountains of evidence about climate change. Temperature extremes are signs of climate change. Guess a few of you really had cabin fever--I can relate. Maybe we can talk about the lack of effective plowing and such or we could just continue to rant about conflicting climate theories which the average Hudson Valley resident really doesn't have time to worry about!
dita von struedel van trappyodel February 16, 2014 at 10:42 PM
Cal and Issy - for God's sake look out the window. It looks and feels like we are in Siberia. Smelly is exactly right.... at a certain point this becomes hard evidence of global cooling rather than a temporary "weather" pattern. Sorry, you guys are drinking the Kool-Aid.
Issy February 17, 2014 at 05:02 AM
So scientists should just look out of their windows to study the world's climate rather than relying on decades of research?.......... The reason why we are having an extreme winter (as predicted by global warming) is that the Jet-stream has become unstable this season due to the warming of the Arctic. Please take the time to look at the overwhelming evidence rather than listening to talking-heads.
