Pelham Students Perform to Fundraise for Band Program

PMS and PMHS students play a fundraising concert on Tuesday night to keep their band program running smoothly

As the sounds of James Brown, Stevie Wonder, and Bach reverberated through the middle school gym on Tuesday, Pelham's students demonstrated why their music program deserves more fundraising dollars.

The middle school band and PMHS' jazz and stage bands came together on Tuesday to show off their talent and to raise money for their music programs. The funds will be used to pay for a number amenities, including trips, replacing and repairing instruments and equipment and purchasing uniforms.

Campbell Whitford, a 39-year veteran of the district's music program, said the performance could not have gone more smoothly. He was particularly impressed with his sixth grade band. They came together from four different schools, and played together.

The music director mentioned that one of the major challenges the students faced was to “get into the concept of playing in a 50-piece band and being aware of what other people are doing and what the sounds are."

Whitford was particularly impressed with the eighth graders' rendition of "Birdland" and the high school band’s command of Bach’s "Overture in Bb."

The success of the program, according to Whitford, is attributed to a simple equation: the dynamics and chemistry of his students.
