Big Lots to Fill Empty Circuit City Building

Big Lots plans to bring about 60-80 new jobs to the area and open this year, Town Supervisor said.

The 30,000 square foot  on Route 6 that has sat vacant for the last few years will soon be occupied by another commercial retail chain. Big Lots has purchased the building, received building permits and will start renovation to its interior in coming weeks, Town Supervisor Linda Puglisi said at a Town Board meeting this month.

Big Lots is a discount retailer that focuses on closeout and overstock merchandise. There are more than 1,400 Big Lots in 48 states.

The company plans to open the Cortlandt location at the end of this year or the first quarter of next year, Puglisi said. The new business will bring about 60 to 80 jobs to the area.

The building was empty for the last few years after the chain Circuit City went into bankruptcy. It took about three to four years of legal procedures in bankruptcy court before a settlement was reached and a bank was able to take over the building. The bank then sold it to Big Lots, Puglisi said.

They've started working on the site. The lot was sealed and striped and there's a coming soon sign out front. I read on another board that Big Lots apparently sells some decent quality furniture at good prices. Since Bob's has not chosen to open in the area, that could be useful for some, in addition to the other discount stuff that they carry.

They've been doing a lot of work the last few weeks and I noticed today that they have shelves inside. They also have signs up saying that they are hiring. I would not be at all surprised if they were open by Black Friday. Stores do the majority of their business between then and the end of the year, so it's certainly in their interest to be open by then.

Their sign is up and there are shopping carts in the parking lot. It wasn't clear that the store is stocked but I didn't park and look inside. I expect they'll be open by the end of the month.

Lots of cars in the lot today so something was obviously going on.
