Pair Your St. Patrick's Pints with Traditional Grub

Westchester welcomes this Irish holiday with traditional Gaelic dishes and reveling

With St. Patrick's Day comes the annual parades, shamrocks and, of course, the traditional foods.

Knuckleheads Tavern, 4400 Boston Post Road, Pelham Manor 914-738-5252

Proprietor Lenny Collura has been at the helm for 25 years serving his reasonably-priced tavern fare. Surprise: on a recent visit we spotted veteran Chef Frankie (previously of La Sala in Larchmont) manning the kitchen. And according to Lenny, during the St. Paddy's Day celebration, the house will be serving some of the 'best' corned beef around via DeSola Provisions of Hunts Point Market. So, you can be sure that there will be plenty of stacked corned beef sandwiches on rye with homemade cole slaw and potatoes, and hearty corned beef platters with boiled potatoes, steamed cabbage and authentic soda bread.

You can also stop by Collura's other spot: Montauk Restaurant & Bar, located at 108 Centre Ave. in New Rochelle (914-235-5252) where a guy named Hollywood is barkeep and host. He says a similar menu will be served starting early afternoon along with Montauk's menu of signature seafood specialties.

The father and son team of Bill and Paul McKenna have been operating this friendly local pub since 1997, trading good bits of daily blarney while delivering solid pub fare. Expect Pete's Shepherd's Pie, filled with beef and vegetables topped with roasted potatoes; Philly Cheese Steak Panini, stuffed with sauteed sliced beef, onions, and cheddar; and juicy 8 oz. burgers with toppings galore. The place is festooned with Irish artifacts. According to the McKennas, they'll have added Irish specialties on hand starting around 11 a.m. along with visiting Pipers around 7 p.m.

The Quarry, 106 Main Street, Tuckahoe 914-337-0311

Owner Dominic Cesarini has settled into new larger quarters in downtown Tuckahoe quite well. The renovated bi-level 70-seat dining room and bustling bar/lounge is always engaged in spirited networking . On St. Paddy's, and right through the weekend, Cesarini plans to fill his blackboard with such Irish specialties as: reuben quesadillas, corned beef and cabbage, bangers and mashed lamb stew, shepherd's pie, and fish and chips and juicy burgers and prime pib on weekends too.

Mamma Francesca, 414 Pelham Road, New Rochelle 914-636-1229

We'll let you in on a long-held secret. Believe it or not, on St. Paddy's Day, this Italian spot has been home to some of the best (and biggest) platters of corned beef and cabbage around. Owner Nick DiCostanzo says he will put it on the blackboard again until it runs out.

He has also been serving three-course winter dinner specials priced at $19.95 per person that are both hearty and easy on your wallet. The fixed price meals are available Sunday through Thursday, holidays not included. There's a children's menu too. The shoreline is a perfect setting for Nick who grew up on the Island of Ischia on the Coast of Capri, and here he is putting out some great corned beef! Special hint: Watch for some big changes here as a Nick celebrates is 25th year along the Sound.

Byrne & Hanrahan, 640 McLean Ave., Yonkers 914-476-2786

Partners Mike Byrne and Brian Hanrahan, two veterans of Smith & Wollensky Steakhouse in Manhattan, took over the former J.J. Mannion's and have been converting it into their very own ode to dry aged beef and fresh seafood along with a nod to the local tavern community. You can order such steakhouse fare as: sirloin, Colorado rib eye, lamb chops and Porterhouse for two. You can hunker down with such tavern specialties as: onion soup, cobb salad, penne alla vodka, fish and chips, or a plump juicy big house burger. We recently enjoyed one of the crabcakes filled with the lump crab.

Look for such St. Paddy's Day fare as: Guiness braised corned beef, cabbage and potatoes; and a Gaelic burger, topped with cheddar, sauteed onions and Irish bacon. There are several dining areas and party rooms and a big long bar/lounge for spirited networking and conversation.
