Pelham scholastic chess teams go on great runs in state championships

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Pelham scholastic chess teams had amazing wins at the 46th annual New York State Scholastic Championships here at the end of February.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Pelham scholastic chess teams had amazing wins at the 46th annual New York State Scholastic Championships here at the end of February.

One of the best records was recorded by Colonial fifth grader Matthew Meyer with 5 wins, and 1 loss. He placed fourth overall in the Elementary Reserve division. Matthew played along with Colonial students Noah Breskin, Matyas Spunberg and Gavin Fear. That powerful Elementary Reserve team placed fifth in the division.

The Elementary Championship division (open to all grades K-6) had the great team of Colonial students Rishi Basu, Christian Shiels (this reporter), Ryan Chang, and Maxwell and Aidan Resnick. They had some amazing upsets and fell just short of the trophies.

The Primary division (3rd grade and under) team from Colonial was Larissa Breskin, Timmy Meyer, Eleanor Neu, Tyler Chang, Amelia Resnick and Kyle Skop. One of the bigger upsets in the division saw Kyle beat a 1,400+ rated player.

The Pelham Middle School team entered the Junior High division (which is open to all people K-9). The team took third place in their division in a very good tournament. Team members were Niklas Breskin, Nicholas Neu, PJ Shiels, Jake Beckman, Andrew Kalyvas and Cameron Catana.

Colonial Kindergartner Kyle Chang and Hutchinson Kindergartner Luis Joshua Casenas, IV competed in the K-1 division.

Mr. Mike Ellenbogen coached the team.
