FIRST GRADE CLASSROOMS -- This year, one of the favorite things done in the first grade was the field trip to “The Nutcracker.”

“The Nutcracker” is a story in a ballet that goes something like this: The main character's (Clara’s) family is having their annual holiday party. After the guests arrive and the party is well underway, Clara’s great uncle comes, and he can do magic.

He gives Clara a nutcracker, but her little brother gets jealous and he steals and breaks the nutcracker. Though her uncle fixes the nutcracker, Clara still sneaks downstairs and falls asleep.

She has a dream of the Nutcracker fighting the Mouse King. The Nutcracker wins with her help. The Nutcracker changes into a prince and takes her to the Land of Sweets. When they arrive there, they are welcomed and honored, and after they go home, Clara wakes up.

Here’s what the first graders said about what it was like to be there:

Lucy Dolan from 1C said she liked the Land of Sweets because different sweets came and danced for Clara and the Nutcracker.

Grace McNamara from 1H liked the Christmas party scene. “After people danced, the uncle came in and gave Clara the nutcracker,” she said.

A lot of kids agreed it was a fun and active show.

This story appeared in the June print edition of the Colonial Times.
