Winter Break, Black History, Wii Fun for Kids

It's 5 things for adults and families to do in the week ahead in White Plains, New Rochelle and nearby.

Here's a few things to keep you going from Presidents' Day through the rest of the week:

, Monday, February 18 to Friday, February 22, 1 p.m. Hudson River Museum, 511 Warburton St., Yonkers NY. Admission: $5. Students on school break join educators and Jr. Docents for creative activities and Planetarium shows. Explore the Hudson River in the Hudson Riverama gallery.  Discover the habitats of the animals that live there. Schedule for the Week: 2/18 Learn about the tide and flow of the River. 2/19 What’s a marsh? Find out when you make a marsh diorama. 2/20 Get to know muskrats- Sculpt your own muskrat model. 2/21 See the different plants on the Hudson and make your own cattail. 2/22 Make your own marsh bird within a landscape. Planetarium Shows Daily at 2 and 3:30 pm- The Sky Tonight: Take a live tour of the heavens from our area - but without the city lights! Ocean of Air, Ocean of Space:  Explore the “invisible miracle” of the air we breathe and the remarkable planet whose life it sustains. Free with Museum admission. Presidents and the Civil War, Monday, February 18, 9 a.m. 897 S. Columbus Ave., Mount Vernon, NY. You’re invited to the opening of a new exhibition exploring the lives of the scores of Civil War veterans buried in the historic cemetery, and chronicling the struggles of a parish and town with the great issues of the national conflict of 1861-1865.  The event features a 1:30 PM talk about the role of religion in the Civil War by Professor Robert T. Valentine of Lehman College.  There will also be afternoon re-enactments commemorating President’s Day and Black History Month.  Historic crafts for children through out the day. Black History Month Author Visit at Barnes and Noble, Monday, February 18, 3:30 p.m. Barnes & Noble, 230 Main St., White Plains, NY. School's out, Come join us! Barnes and Noble presents Children's book Author Mayma Raphael. She will be reading and signing her Book, I Love the Skin I'm In! There will also be craft projects for the kids. Wii Fun for Kids, Thursday, February 21, 4:30 p.m. White Plains Public Library, 100 Martine Ave., White Plains, NY. Join in the Wii Fun games for kids! The competition takes place on the big screen in The Trove's Galaxy Hall. For boys and girls in grades 1 to 5. For more information, call 914-422-1476.

Yonkers Humane Society Adoption Event, Friday, February 22, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. PetSmart Cat Room, 2458 Central Park Ave., Yonkers, NY. The Yonkers Humane Society is participating in a big expanded adoption event that will feature many fabulous friendly felines from the Yonkers Animal Shelter. Beautiful healthy adult cats and kittens will be available for adoption at our ever-popular cat room inside PetSmart. Come visit us and search for your new best feline friend forever.
