5 Things: Pelham Farmers' Market, Tag Sales, Heat Wave Returns

Five things to know for Friday, July 29.

1. Pelham Farmers' Market

If you're looking for seasonal veggies, fresh herbs and fruit, pay a visit to the Pelham Farmers Market on Saturday. Jaclyn Bruntfield's Green Living column this week also has a few great recipes that you can use for any ingredients you pick up at the market. The Pelham Farmers' Market is located on the corner of Harmon and Fifth avenues and is open 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

2. Greenburgh Nature Center Wants an Orchard

Help the Greenburgh Nature Center win an orchard. The center is a finalist in the Communities Take Root national competition. Created by Edy’s Fruit Bars and the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, the contest provides fruit orchards to organizations across the country to encourage healthy eating. You can vote up until Aug. 31 to help the center win the competition.

3. Search for Funniest First Responders, Firefighters and Police Officers

The Empire City Casino in Yonkers is searching for the funniest first responders, firefighters and police officers to compete in a "Laughfest" competition. Qualifying rounds will take place on Aug. 11, 18, and 25, and the final showdown will be held on Sept. 8.  All the proceeds from the competition will benefit a Sept. 11th charity. If you're interested in competing, contact Mike Bennett at 845-838-6009 or mike@whud.com, or log onto www.whud.com

4. Heat Wave This Weekend

We may have gotten a reprieve from the summer weather this week, but Saturday and Sunday will welcome sweltering temperatures. Saturday's high will be 91 degrees, while Sunday's temps will top out at 89 degrees.

5. Weekend Tag Sales

Bargain hunters should check Pelham Patch this afternoon for Patch's guide to this weekend's tag sales. If you're having a tag sale of your own, feel free to add it to our list.
