County Offers Opportunities for Affordable Housing at Expo Saturday

Westchester's settlement with the federal Department of Justice is the impetus for this event.

As Westchester and federal officials continue to wrestle with all the issues surrounding the settlement of the lawsuit on fair and affordable housing, the county is moving forward with its efforts to help those who are eligible explore their possibilities.

Tomorrow a will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Westchester County Center in White Plains. Admission is free.

The Expo will provide free and extensive information about fair and affordable housing opportunities in Westchester,” said County Executive Robert P. Astorino in a press statement. “This is a great way for people to meet with housing professionals, including lenders and not-for-profit credit counselors.”

The county is overseeing the construction of 750 units spread throughout communities where residents are predominantly wealthy and white. 

Pelham and Pelham Manor are among the communities targeted by the lawsuit, though no units are planned currently under the program.

according to James Johnson, the housing monitor appointed to Westchester County by the federal court, are income sources of the people for whom the housing is targeted—such as pensions, social security, veterans' benefits and the federal Section 8 housing subsidy program.
