The kicked off its celebration of the holiday Sukkot Monday by inviting the community to a wine and cheese event.

The seven-day Sukkot holiday is one of three festivals commemorating the wandering of the ancient Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land. Sukkot is a Hebrew term for temporary dwelling places. The huts are built during the holiday as a reminder of the ancient huts used by the slaves as they travelled through the desert.

The sukkots are used as permanent homes during the festival, with some people even sleeping in them overnight, according to Rabbi David Schuck of the Jewish Center.
