Five Things for the Week Ahead: League of Women Voters Dinner, "Bully" Talk and Mount Vernon Relay for Life

What you need to know for the week of June 11, 2012.

 

1.) Richard Zacks, author of "Island of Vice: Theodore Roosevelt’s Doomed Quest to Clean Up Sin-Loving New York," will give a talk on Monday, June 11 at on Roosevelt’s time as New York City’s police commissioner, when he went head-to-head with Tammany Hall and tried to rein in the city’s fleshpots, casinos and all-night dives. The talk begins at 7:30 p.m. The library is located at 530 Colonial Ave, Pelham.

2.) The League of Woman Voters of New Rochelle is hosting its annual dinner meeting at , 700 Main St, New Rochelle, Wednesday, June 13, at 6:30 p.m. The guest speaker for the event is  Bob Marrone, host of “Good Morning Westchester” on WVOX-AM. The cost for the event, which is open to the public is $35. Reservations can be made by calling Joan Alexander at (914) 715-3916.
 
3.) The Picture House will have a 7:30 p.m. The  documentary, directed by Sundance and Emmy-award winning filmmaker Lee Hirsch, gives an unflinching look at how bullying has touched five kids and their families. Following the documentary, there will be a panel discussion led by Cheryl Bobe, director of the Pelham Guidance Council. The discussion is free for anyone who purchased tickets for the movies throughout the week.

4.) Thursday, June 14 is . “Family Time” is an initiative that encourages Pelham families to sit down and enjoy dinner together once a month during the school year. This is the third year that the Pelham PACT has organized the program. A list of take out menus for local restaurants can be found here.

5.) Relay for Life in  Mount Vernon is scheduled to , at the Mount Vernon High School track, located on 100 California Rd, Mount Vernon. Relay for Life is a community event where people come together to celebrate those who have survived cancer, remember those we've lost, and fight back against a disease that touches too many lives. It is an opportunity to have fun while raising much-needed funds to fight cancer and raise awareness of cancer prevention and treatment.There will also be live music, food, games and entertainment.
