Five Things: Pelhamdale Ave. closed, Lola’s on vacation, Parents meet at the high school

Five things you should know for Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011

1) Pelhamdale Avenue remains closed around the 300 block because of trees that fell during Hurricane Irene. There are still homes in the area that are without power. Police said workers from Consolidated Edison are working to restore the area and power should be returned to residents later today or early Friday.

2) is hosting an orientation for parents of ninth-graders this morning. Orientation begins at 7:30 a.m. with coffee. The presentation starts at 8 a.m.

3) is closed until Sept. 7 and will not host "Mah Jong Thursday’s" today.

4) Meteorologists continue to keep an eye on the Atlantic Ocean, where Hurricane Katia continues to build strength. Hurricane observers said it's too early to predict the path of the  storm, which was more than 1,000 miles east of the Caribbean's Leeward Islands, Wednesday night.


5) This day in history: Nazi Germany and Slovakia invade Poland in 1939, sparking World War II in Europe.
