Trees Down, Power Out, No Flooding in Pelham

Downed trees and branches along with power outages are the biggest problems facing Pelhamites the day after Hurricane Sandy.

All around the villages of Pelham Manor and Pelham, leaves and tree branches litter the sidewalks. In the worst cases, tree trunks lay across cars and driveways, front yards and doors.

Esplanade in Pelham Manor was cluttered with tree carcasses and autumn leaves downed by the gale-force winds of Hurricane Sandy. And even though the worst of the storm is past, rain and mist fell intermittently even as homeowners came outside to check the damage to their homes and cars.

Pelham Manor village administrator John Pierpont said Tuesday's damamge tally included "widespread power outages, extensive wind damage and trees down" throughout the area.

Public works and heavy equipment trucks have already been dispatched to handle tree removal and debris clean-up. On more than one lawn, landscaping crews raked debris and leaves while the drone of leaf blowers blasted.

Pierpont said the only reported injury was a peace officer who was hurt by a falling limb Monday night. The officer's injuries were limited and he will make a full recovery. More details will be reported when available.
