African American History Month Commemoration
At 1 PM, Dr.
Sherrill D. Wilson, an urban anthropologist, presents, Celebrating Freedom. Sponsored by the Speakers in the Humanities
bureau of the New York Council of the Humanities, this digital program, with
commentary, explores the official end of slavery in New York, proclaimed on
July 4, 1827. The talk examines the
lives of the formerly enslaved and their annual celebrations of emancipation
with parades, dinners and other festivities.
At 2:30 PM, enjoy a living
history presentation about 26th United States Colored Troops, a New
York-based, African American regiment which fought in the Civil War.
