Yummy, Fresh Produce for Pelhamites

Good news for eco and foodie-minded Pelhamites. People in Pelham can now sign up for a weekly prepaid box of fresh local produce for 22 weeks in the growing season, starting this June 4.

The idea started when Christa Acampora on the Moms of Pelham Facebook page asked about local CSA’s.  There wasn’t one in Pelham at the time but there was lots of interest.  A number of members teamed up in the search, and a wonderful small farm, Hesperides Organica, was selected. Hesperides is less than an hour and a half from Pelham in the extremely fertile “black dirt” region of Orange County, NY, where the soil contains 50-90% organic matter.

The farm practices sustainable agriculture and grows over 70 varieties of vegetables and herbs.  The Pelham Jewish Center has kindly allowed the CSA to use space there for the pickup.

For those who sign up for a share, each box will contain 10-12 vegetables and herbs delivered at their peak of freshness.  Vegetables consumed with minimal handling and time between harvest and table retain far more nutrients than typical produce.

It is also the most environmentally sustainable choice, directly supporting a local farm.  Hesperides also reserves a pick-your-own area free to members and friendly to kids.  In the era of highly processed globally outsourced-everything imagine being able to see the place your food is grown.
