Hazen Fairbank Scholarship Award

Two local college students are recognized for their efforts.

Two young women were recently awarded the Hazen Fairbank Scholarship from the Presbyterian Women of Huguenot (PWH) Memorial Church.  Kerry Davis, who is attending the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and Marianne Rendon, who is attending Bard College, were both honored at the festive PWH Annual June Dinner.

The Fairbank family, whose Pelham roots run so deep they have a street named after them, bequeathed to the PWH the initial funds to establish an educational scholarship for a member of the congregation in memorial to Hazen.  Currently, the PWH continues the educational scholarship – having named it in honor of Hazen – and each year sets aside in its budget $2,500 for this award.

The scholarship is presented to an undergraduate student (or students) after successfully completing at least one year of college.  Applicants need not be members of the church, but must have a "strong tie" to the church.  Strong ties, in the past, have included attendance at youth group, participation in summer youth mission trips, one of Huguenot's choirs or participation in any mission projects throughout the year.  Applicants are assessed based on their relationship to Huguenot Church, their mission involvement, the strength of their essay and their academic record.  Recent previous winners have been Anne Gerald, Jacqui Buchanan and Julia Sterner-Holden.
