Give your child a sponge ball.

Some kids will have to progress without a racquet first.  They need hand eye practice.  Play catch with him.

Other kids are ready for a racquet right away.  Give them a racquet.  Give them a sponge ball.  Give them the opportunity to hit against a wall in your house, garage, etc.

Once they get going, they might be able to hit 50 balls a minute, that's 750 balls in 15 minutes.  That's a lot of tennis balls.

This kid is self motivated & he is going to get good real fast.
