Saying Goodbye to Robert Goodstein

The prominent attorney's face could often be seen in and around the Pelham area.

Robert Goodstein, who could often be found at the Pelham Jewish Center, passed away at the age of 65. Goodstein litigated a number of well known cases. One of them was "State Division of Human Rights v. New York City Road Runners." The crux of the legal action was to allow wheelchair-bound athletes to compete in the New York City Marathon. Goodstein also litigated "Hispanic Society (Guardians Association) v. City of New York." In that case he argued before the U.S. Supreme Court to defend a settlement in which a quota of African Americans had been promoted to the position of Sergeant in the NYPD.

Goodstein was born in New York City and moved to New Rochelle at an early age. He attended the University of Wisconsin and then St. John's Law School. He practiced law in New York City for the State Division of Human Rights. In 1980 he opened up his own practice in New Rochelle.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers that people send donations to the Pelham Jewish Center, 451 Esplanade, Pelham Manor, NY and Stein Yeshiva of Lincoln Park, 287 Central Park Avenue, Yonkers, NY.
