Theodore P. Mayer Remembered for Serving His Country and His Community

Friends and family gather to honor Theodore P. Mayer, a Pelham resident who enhanced the community's schools and library.

Friends and family gathered at Our Lady of Perpetual Help on Monday morning to honor the life of World War II veteran and long-time Pelham resident, Theodore P. Mayer. He was 89 years old.

An immigrant from Bavaria, Germany, Mayer made his way to the United States when he was 5-years-old and grew up in New York City. He served in the Philippines during World War II with the US Army Air Corps and continued in the Reserves as First Lieutenant.

Mayer moved to Pelham in 1966 and worked as an engineer for such firms as Continental Grain, US Cement, Soros Assoc., and Argo Communications.

“He was a man who lived a balanced life,” said the Rev. Oliver Offor who presided over the 10 a.m. Mass. “He was a man who walked high.”

Once Mayer retired, he gave over his skills and time to the people of Pelham. He worked as a substitute teacher in the Pelham schools and helped out with the Manor Club’s events for nearly 15 years. Up until a year and a half ago, Mayer spent his days at the Pelham Public Library, handling anything that needed fixing or sprucing up.

“He had a special set of skills that were helpful to me,” remarked Patricia Perito, director of the Pelham Public library. “He understood issues in the building.”

When Perito would ask if she could help out, Mayer responded with an expected, “I have my way.”

Mayer didn’t just take inventory and assist with repairs during his near 10 years at the library.

He also honored the institution and the role it played in the Pelham community. Every Memorial Day, Mayer raised the flag, even though the library was closed, so that it could wave for those marching in the parade.

Mayer utilized his engineering skills to coordinate activities for children at the library. Just a few summers ago, Theodore whittled boats for the kids to play with in a makeshift pool outside the library.

“He certainly didn’t do this because he needed a paycheck,” Perito offered.

Theodore P. Mayer passed away on Feb. 24 surrounded by family and friends. He is survived by his daughter Katy and cousin Rose-Marie Stock. He was preceded in death by his wife Karen. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in his memory, to the Pelham Public Library, 530 Colonial Avenue, Pelham, NY 10803.
