Updated: BHS Locked Down for Drug Sweep

Police K9 units search high school and parking lot for illegal substances.

Brookfield’s K9 police unit, with assistance from canine units from surrounding towns, did a scheduled sweep of Brookfield High School (BHS) Thursday morning searching for “illegal substances or contraband,” according to principal Joseph Palumbo.

There were no arrests in the sweep, according to Brookfield police, and nothing was discovered, according to Palumbo.

The high school went into lockdown around 9 a.m. Thursday during the sweep of the school and parking lot and students were not allowed to leave their classrooms until 9:50 a.m.

The lockdown and search are an annual effort between Brookfield law enforcement and public schools. A similar search in 2010 turned up a quantity of marijuana in a student’s locker.

“As stated in our student handbook these sweeps are scheduled during the year to help us in our efforts to eliminate the possession or use of illegal substances or contraband,” Palumbo said. Though sweeps are scheduled and coordinated with law enforcement, parents and faculty are not informed until minutes before it happened.

An announcement was made in the building before the sweep began to let students know what was taking place and to avoid concern in regard to the presence of law enforcement officials on campus.

“Students found about the same as the teachers — 8:50,” Palumbo said, with only the two assistant principals, superintendent and members of the Board of Education (BOE) made aware beforehand.

Palumbo said he saw at least four drug-sniffing dogs at the school Thursday and was told they were trained to find marijuana, cocaine, heroin and ecstasy.

In response to a question from a reader on the Brookfield Patch Facebook page, Palumbo stated that looking through the records at BHS “we never found one instance of a student found with heroin.”

How many BOE members have teenagers in the high school who could have passed around the word about the sweep to the other students?

It must have been on the restroom walls in both the girls and the boys room.

as a former BHS student i can say, atleast in my time at BHS (class of 2010), yes there were drugs, but honestly never at school... scratch that, very rarley.. all that takes place under your nose BPD all over town, just not at the highschool lol.. and as far as the heroin problem goes... oh yeah there is a problem.. no doubt about that.... not in the high school tho.. as it is really recent.. i saw heroin once at BHS in 4 years.. one time.. only time i ever saw it in my highschool years come to think of it... right up until beginning of 2012... then, yeah, lots of dope.. the older kids back in the day had OC80's and what not, but they ended up changing the formula so the pills couldnt be snorted.. thus leading to a bunch of opiate addicted teenagers with no supply to stop their opiate withdrawl other than succoming to the evil pull of heroin... the thing is tho, that shit dont come aorund to the high school kids.. i cant think of a single BHS kid i know in school who does heroin.. soo.. idk.. honestly tho, i know way too many people outside BHS that do tho... its crazy

Former BHS Student, are you kidding me? You clearly did not pay attention when they were teaching grammar in English class. Or perhaps you were stoned when you wrote this post. You should proofread before you post.
