New Rochelle and Pelham Manor firefighters are currently battling a blaze on a 61-foot Hatteras Motor Yacht at the New York Athletic Club in Pelham Manor.

The fire call came in at about 12:30 p.m.

New Rochelle fire Chief Louis DiMeglio said the owner of the boat was getting the boat ready for the season when he took the cover off the boat and the fire ignited. He said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. The boat was on dry dock at the time the fire started.

“Right now we’re just waiting for the fire to get put out and we’re going to have our investigator get on there and try and find where it started,” DiMeglio said.

The owner of the boat was taken to the Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx to be treated for burns to his face.

“I don’t know the extent of his injuries,” DiMeglio said. “I don’t think they were life threatening, because I was talking to him first.”

Although the address of the New York Athletic Club is in Pelham Manor, the boat is actually located over the New Rochelle border.

“We’re fighting the fire from down below and the boat is probably about 24 feet high, or better, and we’re lobbing the water from the ground, so that makes it more difficult for us,” DiMeglio said.

DiMeglio said the fire was fully involved by the time firefighters got there. The Pelham Manor Fire Department was the first to arrive at the scene.

This is the second boat fire that the New Rochelle Fire Department has handled this year. On Monday, at the . That fire is still under investigation.
