Nearly 130 Volunteers Graduate from Westchester Fire Training Program

Firefighters represent departments from throughout Westchester County.

Nearly 130 volunteer firefighters from Westchester County walked the stage Thursday during a graduation ceremony at the Robert J. Schnibbe Jr . Support Services Building in Valhalla.

Firefighters from more than 41 departments from Pelham Manor up to North Salem participated in the ceremony, which marked their successful completion of the 95-hour Firefighter I course.

Congratulation speeches were given by county Executive Robert Astorino and county Department of Emergency Services Commissioner John Cullen.

“Most firefighters, once they complete their Firefighter I training, can go on to become interior firefighters now,” said Luci Labriola-Cuffe, training technician for the county Department of Emergency Services. “They still have one more piece of training they have to do in the firehouse, but after that you’re ready to become an interior firefighter.”

The Firefighter I course included training dealing with fire suppression, fire behavior, forcible entry, weapons of mass instruction and hazardous materials.

Astorino commended the graduates for putting in more than 100 hours of training while attending school or working another job.

“I grew up in Westchester, born and raised, and so I’m proud to say that my entire life, I’ve had volunteer firefighters protecting me,” Astorino said. “Whether I was little boy in Thornwood, or whether today, the father of three little kids in Hawthorne. So thank you to my communities for doing what’s needed for us and to all of you surrounding Westchester.”

Graduate Reynaldo Sanchez, of Port Chester, said the ceremony was rewarding after putting in so many hours during the training.

“I tried to keep my confidence high, I tried to stay straightforward and it kept me through it,”  Sanchez said.
