Pelham Manor Fire Department to Hold Open House Today

The open house is part of a statewide effort to recruit more volunteers for local fire departments.

The is opening its doors to the community from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in an effort to attract more volunteers.

Pelham Manor is one of several hundred fire department who are participating in the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York’s RecruitNY campaign. The campaign, which is in its second year, is a statewide effort designed to help local fire departments spread the word about their need for recruits.

In Pelham Manor, there will be food and refreshments available to community members who stop by the firehouse. Two antique fire engines will also be on display.

The event is family friendly, according to J.D. Calder, presidents of the Pelham Volunteer Fire Company.

“We’re looking for men and women volunteers,” Calder said.

Volunteers firefighters act in support role for the village’s professional fire staff.

There are currently 10 volunteers in the department, which is lower than usual. There are usually 15 to 16 volunteers in a normal year, according to Calder.

Although joining the fire department requires a major time commitment, Calder said it is worthwhile.

“It’s one of the few things you can volunteer your time with where you know you’re going to make the biggest difference,” Calder.

The Pelham Manor Fire Headquarter is located on 4 Penfield Pl., Pelham Manor. Anyone interested in volunteering can call Tom Morrissey at 914-738-4041 for more information.
