Pelham Manor Woman Falls for Rental Scam

A woman lost $1,275 to a pair of scammers claiming to rent a home in Delaware.

On Wednesday, a woman reported to Pelham Manor police that she lost more than $1,200 to a man and woman claiming to rent a home in Rehoboth, Del.

On July 5, the woman found an advertisement on Craigslist for a rental. After looking at pictures of the property, she sent an email to reserve a week in August.

The scammers emailed the woman back and she agreed to wire them $1,275. After the money was withdrawn, the victim attempted to contact the couple to finalize some details.

The woman became suspicious when the couple failed to reply to her inquiries, and looked up the address of the rental on Google maps and discovered that it wasn’t the same home shown in the advertisement.

On Aug. 3, the woman contacted Rehoboth police and they confirmed that the people who posted the listing aren’t the same people listed as the property owners.

The woman submitted the bank statement to the Pelham Manor police department Wednesday. The incident remains under investigation.
