Pelham Police Investigate Rash of Car Break-Ins

Items ranging from coins to electrical equipment have been stolen.

Pelham police are investigating a string of car break-ins that took place last week in the village.

More than 10 car break-ins were reported to police during the past several days, with the vast majority taking place Thursday and Friday. In one incident that took place Thursday, three vehicles were broken into at a parking lot located on 620 Fifth Ave. The thief smashed the windows of the vehicles and stole a variety of items ranging from coins to iPads and others electronics.

While the windows were smashed in some of the break-ins, there were other cases where the doors of the vehicles were simply left unlocked. The break-ins have happened to cars parked on the street and in cars that were parked in front of homes.

The crimes took place in the northern end of the village and the south, near the train station. The vehicles targeted ranged from newer to older models.

Detective Rick Deere of the Pelham police department believes some of the break-ins, like the ones committed at 620 Fifth Ave., may have be done by the same person. He reminds residents to take precautions when leaving their vehicles.

“Don’t leave anything valuable in your car that you don’t want to lose, make sure you lock your car doors and make sure your car alarms are turned on,” Deere said. “Their looking for stuff that’s easy to sell or coins. They’re going to take anything valuable that’s left in your car.”

Anyone with information regarding the break-ins can reach Pelham police at (914) 738-2000.
