(UPDATE) Passenger: 'I Didn't Feel Unsafe' During Pelham Train Station Evacuation

A New Haven Line train was stopped at the Pelham train station earlier today after MTA police were notified of a suspicious package.

UPDATE (5:45 p.m.):Andrew Todd, a Connecticut resident, was on the New Haven Line Train that was stopped in Pelham today after a passenger made threats with a suspicious bag in his possession.

At about 2:15 p.m., Todd said the train's conductors had warned passengers the train was stopping due to an emergency. Shortly after the announcement, police had arrived at the scene and passengers had been evacuated.

Once police K-9s did a sweep of the train and a man was taken into custody, passengers were allowed back onboard. The conductor explained to passengers that a male passenger had made threats regarding the contents of his backpack, Todd said.

"I didn't feel unsafe at all," Todd said. "I think they did an excellent job of handling the situation."

Aaron Donovan, a spokesman for the MTA, confirmed that the bag removed from the train was deemed to be safe and no other threats were found on the train. Donovan said the train made it to Grand Central Station about 34 minutes late.

Donovan was unable to say what threats were made or if the suspect had been formally charged this evening.

Update (3:50 p.m.): Aaron Donovan, a spokesman for the MTA, confirmed that police have taken a man into custody in connection to their investigation of the suspicious package removed from the Pelham train station earlier today.

Donovan said police haven't identified the man and it is unclear if any charges have been filed.

Metropolitan Transit Authority Police are investigating a suspicious package that was found today on a New Haven Line train headed to Grand Central Station.

Police received the call at about 2:15 p.m. while the train was in the vicinity of Pelham, according to Aaron Donovan, a MTA spokesman. The train was scheduled to arrive at Grand Central Station at about 2:40 p.m.

Passengers were briefly evacuated onto the platform while the package was removed from the train. The train resumed service at about 2:50 p.m. Check back for more details as they become available.
