A fire in Pelham seriously injured a woman and displaced seven people Saturday morning, according to officials.
The Pelham Fire Department and units from surrounding towns responded to a call from a multiple-family dwelling at 511 6th Avenue on the Pelham-Mount Vernon boarder at approximately 8:55 a.m.
One woman was taken to Jacobi Medical Center with serious injuries, according to Pelham police.
The American Red Cross is assisting two families of three and a single man who was not at the residence at the time of the fire, according to the latest reports from Red Cross spokesperson Caroline Sherwin. Initially it was believed that only one family and four single people occupied five units in the dwelling. The injured woman is a member of one of the families.
Sherwin said major fire damage was contained to the apartment belonging to the injured woman. The remaining residents were able to remove their personal belongings and secure housing through Monday, when power is expected to be restored to the dwelling.
Members of the Red Cross mental health team are working with family members of the injured woman.
