Woman Still Hospitalized Following Fire in Pelham

Pelham woman remains hospitalized following Saturday morning fire on Sixth Ave.

A Pelham woman remains hospitalized after a Saturday morning fire at 511 Sixth Avenue in Pelham. According to police, the woman was transported to Jacobi Medical Center with serious injuries. No update on her medical condition was available Sunday night.

The Pelham Fire Department and units from surrounding towns responded to a call from a multiple-family dwelling at 511 Sixth Avenue on the Pelham-Mount Vernon border at approximately 8:55 a.m.

American Red Cross spokesperson Caroline Sherwin said Sunday that occupants in three dwellings had been displaced by the fire. The family of the injured woman, including her teenaged son, is receiving ongoing assistance from a mental health professional.

"Pelham police and fire departments were great," said Sherwin. "They called [Red Cross] right away and got volunteers out immediately."

There was also a single man and second family affected displaced by the fire. Both were able to retrieve some of their personal belongings from the fire and were provided food and lodging by the Red Cross.

Sherwin said major fire damage was contained to the apartment belonging to the injured woman.

Members of the Red Cross will continue to offer support to the affected residents.
