$100,000 Fed Grant Helps Pelham Manor Buy Gear for Firefighters

Homeland Security funding program supports equipment purchases.

Pelham Manor is getting more than $100,000 to buy new equipment for its firefighters.

U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel, D-NY, said the funding from Homeland Security, and administered through FEMA, is part of a federal effort to help municipalities better prepare for responding to fires and other emergencies.

“We are grateful to our elected officials and to FEMA, that they realize the need to assist local municipalities in supplying the necessary equipment for our firefighters to do their jobs more safely and effectively," Pelham Manor Mayor Randy Sellier said.

The $108,175 grant will fund the Pelham Manor Fire Department's purchase of 18 Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus units used by firefighters so they can safely breathe while fighting fires or dealing with hazardous fumes or materials.

“As municipalities around the state and nation deal with tightened budgets, grants such as this one come in very handy," Engel said. "The Village of Pelham Manor will be stronger in responding to emergencies thanks to this grant, as it supplements the fine work already being done by village first responders. Village firefighters risk their lives on a daily basis protecting the residents of Pelham Manor in the hours of their greatest need, and they should have the tools and training needed to keep up this outstanding work.”
