The Democratic Primary for the 16th Congressional District takes place Tuesday.
U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel, D-Westchester/Bronx, squares off against Aniello M.A. Grimaldi, an attorney from the Bronx.
Engel currently represents a region that includes the northwestern part of the Bronx, traveling north up Yonkers, the Rivertowns and part of Tarrytown, and connects to southern Rockland via the Tappan Zee Bridge.
But that has changed .
Now, the district will become geographically compact, remaining in the Bronx while picking up part of Lowey's southern Westchester area. Areas included in the new district include Scarsdale, Greenburgh, Eastchester, the City of Rye, Mamaroneck, Pelham, Yonkers and Mount Vernon.
His district will be renumbered from the 17th to the 16th.
"I hope everyone comes out and votes because it's going to be a low turnout and, of course, I hope everyone votes for me," Engel said. "But I think everyone should come out and vote because that's the Democartc process. I think when you have been elected as many times as I have, I think a re-election is really a referendum on the kind of job I am doing. If people are happy with the job I'm doing they'll vote for me and If they're not, they won't."
Grimaldi acknowledges that he is the underdog, but he believes his message is one that will resonate with the voters.
"I'm totally different from any other Democrat in the country," Grimaldi said. "I'm proposing a major change in the education system...The goals aren't just reading or writing. My goals is to create best person we can create."
Engel’s stances on number of issues ranging from abortion, which he has stated his pro-choice, to veteran’s affairs and the war on Iraq can be found here. Engel's Patch blog posts on Patch can be found here.
