Pelham Police Chief: Restoration Efforts Underway

Portions of the Hutchinson River Parkway remained flooded and some neighborhoods were without power in Pelham Sunday afternoon, according to Pelham police.

It was hard not to notice the smile Sona Davidian managed to form on her face Sunday as she fetched water from the flooded basement inside her Highbrook Avenue home.

“We thought that it was better than expected,” the Pelham resident said. “We were lucky, because Highbrook usually gets it bad during storms. But we’ve been through worse.”

Irene’s rampage was evident, as a few areas in the town still remained under water and some roads were blocked by large trees.

Pelham Village Police Chief Joe Benificio said he knew of only one person that used the town’s shelter at the Richard J. Daronco Town House. Police transported the person to the shelter after her car got stuck on the Hutchinson River Parkway Saturday night.

Benificio said the shelter will remain open tonight as Con Edison workers worked to restore power.

“We might have some people come who still don’t have power,” he said.

Benificio said neighborhoods around Pelhamdale, Highbrook and Corlies avenues were experiencing power outages caused by trees falling on power lines in the afternoon.

Deborah Knapp, who lives on Corlies Avenue, said many of her neighbors were out of power Sunday, but her home didn’t experience any outages.

“We were lucky,” she said.

Some of the exits on the Hutchinson River Parkway were still flooded and there was still some flooding on Colonial Avenue, near the Pelham Public Library.
