“We have to make sure we shop in our local communities and the best way to accomplish that is to make our shopping districts more inviting,” Klein said.

The five contest categories were for the best bar and restaurant, business, container, hanger and green space. There were eight big winners that came out of a group of more than 20.

The contest winners were Bistro Rollin Inc., The Public House, the 21 Fifth Avenue apartment building,  Capital One Bank,  Joan Solimine Real Estate, Pelham Pet Shop and Depot Market and the Pelham Art Center.

“We were thrilled to receive an award for our efforts,” said Lynn Honeycutt, executive director of the Pelham Art Center. “But, most of all to see the enthusiastic participation from all of the businesses on the street to make downtown Pelham look so summery and inviting.”

The event was organized by Kate Collins-Novikov, chairwoman of the Pelville Association Beautification Committee, who gave opening remarks.

“The contest was organized to celebrate the efforts and achievements of residents and businesses who contribute to making Pelville a cleaner and more beautiful place to live, work and visit,” said Collins. “This is the first time we’ve ever done anything like this before but it’s turned into something that we can all be very proud of.”

After the winners were announced, the Westchester Swing Band performed classics from the swing era that kept many concertgoers tapping their toes and clapping their hand to the rhythm of the beat.
