Plan to Stop Saturday Mail Delivery Returned to Sender

Congress passed a bill today requiring Saturday delivery.

The Postal Service will have to find another way to cut costs. Congress passed a bill today requiring 6 day delivery to continue, thwarting the Post Office's plan to cut Saturday service this August. The House of Representatives passed the bill today, the Senate earlier this week. The measure now requires President Obama's signature.

The Postal Service announced last month it would suspend Saturday delivery in an effort to save $2 billion per year. The Postal Service says it loses approximately $16 billion annually. The Postal Service is not a government agency.

The Huffington Post reports polls show a majority of Americans would have supported the proposed reduction in delivery.

"Once the delivery schedule language in the Continuing Resolution becomes law, we will discuss it with our Board of Governors to determine our next steps," said David Partenheimer, a spokesman for the Postal Service.

Requesting money from the government for support may be among those next steps. Partenheimer said other options may also be considered such as limiting delivery.
