Peekskill Schools Reassign 4 Guidance Counselors for Sketchy Transcripts

Peekskill school officials are investigating discrepancies in a small number of transcripts of students at risk of not graudating.

Peekskill city schools have announced that three guidance counselors from the high school and one middle guidance counselor have been placed on a paid administrative reassignment due to irregularities in a small amount of student transcripts.

School Superintendent James Willis said the matter was brought to his attention by high school Principal Fred Hutchinson, who noticed the irregularities. The discrepancies affect a small number of current students at risk of not completion graduation requirements.

"This is obviously, an evolving story that we have not fully concluded investigating," Willis said in letter sent out by the school district. "I recognize that this may be frustrating, and all I can promise is that we will work as quickly as possible to resolve the situation and communicate details with our residents."

Willis said the New York State Education Department was notified and is working with the school district to investigate the matter. He declined to reveal further details about the guidance counselors' roles in the incident, but said the district is currently in the process of recruiting and hiring additional guidance counselors to fill in the gap.

An assistant high school principal and other school support staff are filling in until more guidance counselors have been hired.

A copy of the letter Willis sent out explaining the situation is attached to this story.

This is going to open a whole can of worms that the district isn't prepared to deal with. Other school districts have done the same or similar (inflating grades so kids are more likely to enter Ivy league schools) but the question on people's minds is, how far back does this go? They haven't released any names so it's a sit and wait game.

Once again we are seeing just how terrible our education system has gotten, it is full of over paid, underworked, under performing people whose only reason for being there is to collect unbelievable defined pensions, free health plans, and only having to work 185 days a year. It is full of a good ole club mentality, where everyone is making sure he or she gets his or hers. That is why there is such a outcry about finally taking a very small step in these teacher evaluations, which should not end with teachers as the administrators are even worse.

@Stacie....Like I stated previously I'm sure it goes way back, but I too want to know who is involved as Johnson stated in her Q&A.. Q: What are some of your beliefs that you try to instill in the teachers of your district? Well I have probably personally hired over half the staff in these last 9 years or so. These teachers were committed to coming to work every day, recognizing the district goals and being accountable for reaching these goals. Otherwise, they didn't get past my door......#youcan'tfoolallofthepeopleallofthetime...

I don't see what the guidance counselors, or teachers would have to gain if Dick or Jane didn't graduate. I think this comes from higher up, they want to increase a poor graduation rate, and make it look like they have improved the drop out rate for the school....
