Pelham School District Performs Well on 2011 ELA and Math State Tests

A majority of third to eighth graders in the Pelham School District scored at or above proficiency in both subjects.

Data released by the New York State Department of Education on Monday show that a majority of students in the Pelham School District have a high proficiency in both English Language Arts (ELA) and math.

More than 75 percent of Pelham students in the third to eighth grade who took the 2010-2011 ELA and math assessments scored at or above proficiency in both subjects.

The results in Pelham also reflect performance statewide. Though this year's English scores were slightly lower than last year and math scores remained fairly consistent, a majority of students in New York met or exceeded the state’s proficiency standards in both subjects, according to the department.

The Department of Education made this year’s tests more comprehensive and changed proficiency standards on last year’s exam to better reflect college readiness—resulting in lower test scores in many school districts—but the Pelham school district’s overall results for ELA and math at every grade level remained largely the same this year compared to last.

The Colonial School had its highest test scores in fourth grade math, with more than 98 percent of students scoring into a Level 3 and 4—at proficiency and above proficiency, respectively. At the Hutchinson School, nearly 83 percent of students scored at or above proficiency in fourth grade math, the category in which the school performed the best. The results were similar at the Prospect Hill School, with more than 91 percent of students performing at those levels in fourth grade math. The Siwanoy School, however, had the best performance among all the district’s elementary schools in this category—100 percent of its student tested at Level 3 and 4. Pelham Middle School performed best in sixth and eighth grade math, with more than 88 percent of students testing at or above proficiency.
