Pelham Schools Chief is Calling it Quits

Dennis Lauro announced that he is retiring at the end of this year.

Dennis Lauro is calling it quits after 16 years as an employee in the Pelham school district.

Lauro, who currently serves as the superintendent of schools, announced during Monday’s school board meeting that he plans to retire at the end of  December.

Lauro started at Pelham schools in 1996 when he was hired as the director curriculum and instruction. He went on to become the district’s assistant and deputy superintendent before being promoted to superintendent of schools in 2008.

“I am particularly thankful to all the parents, past and present, who have supported the public schools in Pelham,” Lauro said in a press release. “I wish to thank members of the PTA Council who give their time to best assist the administration and teachers in providing a quality educational program. The results of their support are all around us.

Lauro said he knew it was time to move on after he received an invitation to his 50th anniversary high school reunion.

“I knew it was time to change paths and begin to look at my life differently,” he said. “I believe Pelham is in a very good place at this point, both educationally and financially. This is in keeping with the fine legacy of strong, effective leadership that has allowed the Pelham schools to flourish.”

The Pelham school board hasn’t announced any plan for when and how it will go about seeking Lauro’s replacement.
