Pelham Schools Hope to Approve Deal with Civil Service Union Next Month

A last minute glitch during Monday's school board caused a delay in the district's approval of a deal with its civil service employees.

The Pelham school district is closing in on a contract with its civil service union, according to schools Superintendent Dennis Lauro.

Both sides have been negotiating a deal since the last contract expired on June 30. A tentative agreement was reached and union ratified the deal on Sept. 14.

Union represents teacher aides, nursing, clerical and custodial staff. The school board was scheduled to approved the agreement during Monday’s meeting, but the motion was tabled to the next meeting.

“There were some extenuating circumstances that we weren’t aware of when the agreement first came to the table,” Lauro said. “I’m sure we’ll clarify that matter.”

Lauro said he will not go into the specifics of the agreement until it has been approved by both sides. But he said two issues the district wants to address in the deal  are pay and tuition reimbursement for the children of school employees.

The board’s next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 7.
