Pelhamites Approve New School Budget

Pelhamites approved their district's new spending plan last night. 774 people voted yes, while 194 residents voted against the spending plan. The budget, which totals almost $69 million, has the potential to raise the tax levy as much as 3.25%. District officials say unfunded state mandates were a key reason for the increase. To help keep costs in check the district has reduced staff and moved cash from the operations budget to student programs.

While there was a debate regarding the budget, the school board election was very quiet this year because all of the candidates are running unopposed. The candidates include Peggy O'Leary who is wrapping up her first term on the board. O'Leary received 759 votes. Lisa Kiernan, who is currently in her second term and also serves as board president, got 836 votes. Tom Imperato, who is president of the Council of PTAs, received 794 votes.
