Through his first three Summer League games, former Iona College point guard Scott Machado is leading the Houston Rockets in assists.

Machado went unselected at last month’s NBA Draft and signed with the Rockets’ Summer League team. Machado hasn’t started for Houston, but is playing about 20 minutes a game off the bench.

His 5.3 assists per game are the sixth highest total in all of Summer League, despite playing 20.7 minutes a game. Of the top 29 players in assists per game during Summer League, Machado plays the fewest minutes per contest.

Machado is also averaging four points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. Through the Rockets first three games, Machado has seen an increase in minutes played each game, and had his most productive day in the Rockets’ most recent contest, 113-91 win agains the Sacramento Kings.

In that game, played yesterday, Machado had his highest number of points (six), assists (10) and steals (three). He also tied his Summer League best with three rebounds.

The Rockets have just two more Summer League games. They play today against the Portland Trail Blazers at 8 p.m. and tomorrow against the Chicago Bulls at 6 p.m.

The Rockets point guard situation might also get a big deeper around midnight tonight. Over the weekend, the Rockets signed Jeremy Lin to an offer sheet. The New York Knicks have until around midnight tonight to match the offer if they want to bring back Lin. If the Knicks don’t sign, Lin will head to Houston, possibly taking away their need for another point guard and perhaps making it more difficult for Machado to make the team.
